This year there were a total of 23 applicants for the MrJulia Henriëtte Jaarsma-Adolfs scholarship and 19 for the Prof. DrTh.M. de Boer Scholarship, with several students vying for both. The applications were evaluated by Prof. DrM.Y.A. Zieck and Prof. DrT.M. de Boer, who paid particular attention to study results, social commitment and the applicants’ motivation to further their law studies in a common law jurisdiction.

Excellent study results

In addition to her excellent study results and wide-ranging academic interests, Anne van den Bergh stood out from the field of candidates for the Jaarsma-Adolfs scholarship on account of her social commitment. She has chaired the Student Council of the Amsterdam Law School since September 2018 and also volunteered at the African Refugee Development Center in Tel Aviv in 2015 and 2016. Her oral motivation clearly reflected her commitment and demonstrated her awareness of the current political reality in Israel.

Her own non-profit organisation

Zohara Mahmoud has been in the Honours Bachelor of Cultural Anthropology programme at the UvA since 2015 and she also enrolled in the Honours Bachelor of Dutch Law programme in 2017, for which she was also awarded a cum laude for her propaedeutic year; she has a current grade point average of 8.2. The selection committee was very impressed by the non-profit organisation she runs; it offers free tutoring to young people from a non-Western background.
