One of the specific shapes that work takes in the era of digitalization is platform work. This concerns digital platforms that use algorithmic management to connect workers, that appear to be self-employed, with consumers and suppliers. There are different kinds of platforms. This research focuses on off line/on-demand labour platforms, which require low skills and physical work, use apps and operate in a delimited geographical space. They include the platforms that offer, among others, food delivery, transport, domestic and care work, and home repair. This study analyzes the labour process and the process of organization of riders in three platform companies (Rappi, Glovo and Pedidos Ya) in Buenos Aires. On the one hand, it analyzes the main characteristics that the labour process assumes under algorithmic management, defined as oversight, governance and control practices conducted by software algorithms over large groups of remote workers. One the other hand, taking into account that the labour process involves control and also resistance, it analyzes how workers organize themselves, using the power resources they have at their disposition. This analysis is of particular interest because the process of organization and resistance of the delivery workers in Buenos Aires resulted in the establishment of the Platforms Workers’ Association (Asociación de Personal de Plataformas, APP), the first platform workers’ union in the Americas.
