The WageIndicator Foundation, together with the Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions, is running a project – funded by FNV Mondiaal - to collect data on wages and labour conditions of the workers in the garment sector in Ethiopia. Since the start of the project, in the beginning of last year, 52 factories (1061 workers) have been interviewed and the first data on labour conditions and wages are now available. The wages appear to be in general incredibly low, while – thanks to the survey – some common issues regarding working conditions could be identified. It's possible to compare the data about working conditions in this sector in Ethiopia with the data from Indonesia, where a similar project is being run on a bigger scale. This survey also posed interesting methodology challenges, which are being dealt with in order to improve its quality for the next round of interviews later this year.
